How does Google rank your web page?
Google ranks web pages by counting how many links point to your site. If there are
many sites linking back to you, then it assumes your site must be popular and
important. Each link to your site counts as a "vote", except some votes count
more than others. For instance, if www.cnn.com has a link to your site, this
will count much more than if www.smithfamilypage.yahoofreesites.com link back
to you. Google calls this PageRank and was developed by Google founders Larry
Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University.

Tips to increase your Google ranking:
To Increase PageRank
-
The PageRank algorithm counts the number of links (votes) and the number of
pages in your web site. The ONLY
way to increase your PageRank is to increase the number of pages or get other
sites to link to your site or preferably do both.
-
If Google can't spyder your web page, then it might as well not exist. Make
sure the googlebot can find all your pages. If you use Flash or a javascript
menu then provide an alternate way for the googlebot to traverse your site,
either with <noscript> tags, an alternate navigation menu or alternate
HTML site
-
The PageRank algorithm is well known and there are many people willing to cheat
the system. Long past are the days of stuffing keywords inside your meta tag or
having white text on a white background to trick Google into thinking your page
is more important then it really is. If Google, or any other search engine for
that matter, detects these tricks, your ranking will penalized heavily or even
banned.
-
The latest search engine cheat is to join a link trading program simply to
exchange links that will in turn increase your PageRank. Google has been aware
of this issue and in November 2003, released it's latest refinement, the
Florida update, which attempts to detect if you are part of a "link farm" with
the sole purpose of spamming links with thousands of other unrelated sites.
Google will now penalize link farms. Instead trade links with sites that are
actually related in content, or even better, provide good content to encourage
natural linking.
To Index Content
-
Build a list of keywords and spread your keywords throughout your page.
Following is the generally accepted order of importance of keyword location:
1. Title Meta Tags (not more than 60 characters)
2. Anchor Text (incoming and internal)
3. Header Tag Content (i..e H1, H2, H3, H4, H5)
4. Title Tag in Anchor Tags
5. Bold/Italic Tag Content
6. Body Text on top, middle and bottom of page
7. Alt Tags in Pictures that are Links
8. URL/Filenames
8. Meta Keyword Description
9. Alt Tags in Pictures that are not Links
-
If your links or content are inside Flash or a javascript menu, add a copy
inside <noscript> tags for Google to spyder your other pages. Googlebot
cannot understand javascript and Flash.
-
If you have a Flash site running on a single page, consider creating an
alternate HTML only version of your web site to allow Google to index your
content. Also more pages = higher PageRank.
Googlebot crawls the web (over 4 billion pages) about once per month. It normally
takes a few cycles to notice your PageRank to increase.
My Own Results
I launched my web site in the summer of 2000. For several years, my site did not
pull up in any search engines. In the spring of 2004 I became curious about why
some sites rank highly and if there was something one could do to influence
rank. I decided to use my own site as a test case. I spent the next month
learning everything I could about the black art of search engine optimization
and then redesigned my site to incorporate what I learned. After only four
months, I went from having no PageRank to PageRank 5 and now my pages
consistantly rank in the
top 10 results for their search terms.
